Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Gynecomastia, commonly known as male breast reduction, is a procedure to reduce enlarged, female-like breasts in men using liposuction and/or cutting out excess glandular tissue. This procedure may be covered by medical insurance.

Risks and Side Effects

You can reduce your risk of complications by closely following Dr. Sproule's instructions both before and after surgery. Like with some surgerical techniques, there may risks and side effects. Some risks of gynecomastia include: infection; excessive fluid loss leading to shock. On the other hand, you may experience some fluid accumulation, injury to skin, rippling or bagginess of skin, and/or asymmetry. If you experience pigmentation changes, be aware that this may become permanent if exposed to sun. You may also experience excessive scarring if tissue was cut away. A second procedure may be required to remove additional tissue.Some side effects include: temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness, and/or a burning sensation.

You should be back to work in about 3 to 7 days. Refrain from strenuous activities for about 2 to 3 weeks. The swelling will most likely persist for another 3 to 6 months. The results of a gynecomastia are permanent.
