Scarborough Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck syrgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and lasts from one to three hours.

During your Scarborough abdominoplasty surgery a horizontal incision is made above the pubic hairline in an area normally covered by a bikini. The skin is then lifted off the deep muscle layer as far up as the line of the lower ribs. The umbilicus (navel) remains in its normal position. At this time if another procedure is to be carried out simultaneously this will be done. Abdominal wall tightening then may be done. At the end, the skin is then pulled down and the excess fat and skin are removed from the lower margin. Sometimes stretch marks in the remaining skin may become less visible.

Surgical drains may be left in the incision, and they will be removed in one to three days after tummy tuck surgery.

The major scar lies in a horizontal line in the lower part of the abdomen, usually hidden by a bikini, and a small scar encircles the umbilicus.

There may be some variations in the type of scars. It may be necessary to incorporate a vertical incision in the midline in cases with severe redundancy, resulting in a vertical scar as well.

Liposuction of the hips and the upper thighs may be done in association with tummy tuck surgery.

The length of hospital stay will vary with the complexity of the surgery. It is important to remain inactive for two weeks or so to allow the tissues to heal together. A girdle should be worn in the postoperative period. In bed, the legs should be bent at the hip and knee areas to avoid a strain on the incision line.
